Philippe Audegean

Short bio

Born in 1969, Philippe Audegean is a full professor of philosophy at Sorbonne University (Paris, France). He has mainly studied Beccaria and the penal philosophy of the Enlightenment. His publications include his French translation of Crimes and Punishments (2009), accompanied by an extensive critical apparatus (the edition was republished online in 2022), and two monographs on Beccaria (Beccaria, European Philosopher, 2014, an Italian translation of a book published in French in 2010, and Violence and Justice. Beccaria and the Penal Question, 2023). He edited the first edition of a pioneering text of abolitionism, which remained unpublished for a long time (Giuseppe Pelli, Contro la pena di morte [ms. in 1760-1761], 2014). Philippe Audegean has also dedicated part of his research to Leopardi (in 2012 he published a book in French on the Operette morali).

Visiting activity

During his stay at UnitelmaSapienza, Professor Audegean will hold a public seminar on Cesare Beccaria’s work in the context of the Penal Enlightenment, will produce a short series of video lectures on Cesare Beccaria’s work for students of the criminology and legal-philosophical courses at UnitelmaSapienza, and will participate in the work of the newly established legal-philosophical research group on the boundaries of freedom.
