Participation, Lobbying and Transparency in the EU: A Comparative Perspective | First issue

Edited by Pier Luigi Petrillo and Andrea Fiorentino

The first issue of Global Perspectives on Culture, Politics and Democracy explores the relationship between lobbying, transparency and democratic participation through comparative, interdisciplinary and practice-oriented perspectives.

Developed within the Jean Monnet Module “Participation, Lobbying and Transparency in the EU Institutions” (PLAT.EU), co-funded by the European Union from 2023 to 2026, the issue represents the outcome of a three-year programme of teaching, research and debate on the regulation of organised interests and their role in democratic decision-making.

The volume brings together seven peer-reviewed contributions by participants in the PLAT.EU Intensive Summer School, addressing different dimensions of lobbying and participation: regulatory frameworks, transparency and accountability, lobbying techniques, public consultations, technological innovation, artificial intelligence and comparative experiences from Europe and beyond.

Despite their diversity in methods, geographical focus and subject matter, the contributions share a common concern: how can the relationship between public decision-makers and organised interests be governed in ways that ensure transparency, integrity, equal access and meaningful democratic participation?
